BLSA Elections and Upcoming Events

BLSA Elections Are Now Over!

Thank-You to all of the BLSA members who participated in the election for next year’s BLSA Board! The results will be announced next Monday, March 30th.

Cooley Godward Kronish LLP

The Diversity Committee of Cooley Godward Kronish would like to invite the 1L students of BLSA at Santa Clara School of Law to a reception entitled "Planning Ahead: Tips on Surviving On-Campus Interviews and A Preview of Law Firm Life" on Friday, April 3, 2009 from 4:30pm to 6:00pm. Students interested in attending this event should RSVP by March 27th.

Last, but not least, the National Black Prosecutor’s Association will be holding their annual job fair on Tuesday, July 21, 2009 in Memphis, Tennessee. If you are interested in this event, please read the two documents attached to this email.

Elections for the 2009/2010 BLSA Board!!

Elections for next year’s BLSA board are quickly approaching. A detailed list of information and duties for each of the 10 board positions are attached to this email. Upcoming Happy Hour Mixer!

BLSA is co-sponsoring a Happy Hour Mixer with La Raza that is scheduled for Monday, March 23rd at Tied House. More details to follow!

Come say goodbye to your fellow 3L classmates as they embark into life after law school! BLSA’s Graduation Celebration will be held from 7:00 p.m. – 9:00 p.m. on May 22nd at Fiorillos Restaurant. More details to follow as the date approaches.

Every year, BLSA makes an effort to reach out to the minority applicants, who have been accepted to SCU, and to make the feel at home, and welcome at our school. (1) Black Women Lawyers Association Scholarship Application
"This year the BWLA will award scholarship(s) to second and third-year full time law students as well as fourth year law students enrolled in night programs who intend to practice law in California. Recipients are slected on the basis of financial need, community service, academic achievement and legal writing ability...

...Completed applications must be postmarked no later than March 27, 2009. Successful applicants will be recognized at the Black Women Lawyer's Foundation Luncheon at the Luxe Hotel on May 2, 2009.

Upcoming Events

Throwdown Thursday, February 5th

We'll be having our Throwdown Thursday at the 4th Street Bowl this Thursday, Feb 5th from 8pm to 12 am. I reserved it for a party of 30, with it being 7 people per lane. Its going to cost $4.50 per person for the game and $3 per person for shoes. The spot has a lounge/bar with happy hour starting from 4 pm to 7, and karokee starting at 8, so it should be pretty interesting. Sit back, socialize and hit a couple strikes!

Celebrating Black History Month at SCU

Santa Clara University has arranged an array of events to celebrate Black History Month. There are several upcoming readings, speakers and film screenings, so please check it out!

NBLSA Scholarship and Annual Convention

The National Black Law Students Association will be holding its annual National Convention in Irvine from March 18 – March 22, 2009. If you are interested in attending this convention, please contact me for further information.

Don't forget about the 2009 NBLSA scholarship application packet. There are four different scholarships which you may apply for. All scholarship applications must be submitted to nblsascholarships@gmail.com by March 1, 2009. Scholarship recipients will be notified at the National Convention in March.

Bay Area Minority Law Student Scholarship Program

The Bay Area Minority Law Student Scholarship Program is now available online at the following link: http://www.sfbar.org/diversity/scholarships.aspx. Student recipients receive a $10,000 scholarship towards their first year of law school. Thereafter, the scholarship is renewable for an additional two years. The deadline for completed applications is May 15, 2009, by 4:00 p.m.

BLSA General Meeting Tomorrow!

BLSA's general club meeting will be held tomorrow, January 28th, at noon in Bannan 137. Dean Erwin has graciously accepted our invitation to come to the meeting to talk about SCU's grading policy and to answer any questions that you might have now that most if not all of last semester's grades have now been posted. Food will also be provided, so please stop by!

If you ordered a BLSA t-shirt, please contact Maurice Poe at mpoe@scu.edu to set up a time to pick up your shirt. The cost is $15 per shirt.
