BLSA fundraising

Hi all,

BLSA is in need of your help to raise a few bucks. This week, Monday-Thursday at 12 and at 5 in Bannan Lounge, BLSA is selling spring greetings. These greetings will include the Fair Trade Chocolate we have ordered to go along with our event for Wednesday, at noon, in B135.

What BLSA needs a few people to help make greetings and to sell them. We will be making them in Bannan on Sunday 4-5. Let me know if you can come, and bring your scissors. We need people to help sell during the week 12-1 and 5-6 in Bannan. Please let me know if you can cover a shift – I know that Tuesday and Thursday are uncovered. Additionally, we’d like to make sure everyone makes the event on Wednesday at noon. Making them is more important than selling them: we’re pretty sure we can sell some on Wed. during the event. Also, TELL A FRIEND!

I know life is busy with elections and the LARAW final, but I hope you find some time can help make this event a success for BLSA. Anything you can do will be appreciated.

Peace,

Sherrett

Help with Immigration – e-mail the Board if you are interested in helping.

My name is Erika Rivera and I am an alum of SCU Law. I now work at CET's Immigration and Citizenship Program (we are located near downtown San Jose) and am looking for law student volunteers to assist CET and the other agencies in the Santa Clara County Collaborative with Citizenship Day on Saturday, March 17th.

We're looking for students who can donate a minimum of 2-3 hours of their time on that day to help us screen possible citizenship/naturalization. I am available to come to campus next week and train any interested students during the lunch hour or in the evening, whatever would be easier for your respective memberships.

Citizenship Day is a great experience and you and your fellow classmates would be helping hundreds of Santa Clara County residents start their journey towards US citizenship.

Please let me know if you are interested in receiving a quick training so that you can help us out at Citizenship Day on Saturday March 17th.

Thank you and I hope to hear from you all soon!

Summer Job – Equal Justice Society

EJS Law Clerk Positions - Deadline April 1st

LAW CLERK POSITIONS AVAILABLE

Application Deadline: April 1, 2012

Visit our Jobs page to download a PDF of this announcement

EJS has law clerk positions available for Fall 2012 at our office in San Francisco. EJS law clerks participate in legal research, writing, and analysis in the areas of civil rights and racial justice. The positions are open to law students who have completed at least their first year of law school. For more information, emailinfo@equaljusticesociety.org.

The Equal Justice Society is a national legal organization focused on restoring constitutional safeguards against discrimination. Our goal is to help achieve a society where race is no longer a barrier to opportunity. Specifically, EJS is working to fully restore the constitutional protections of the Fourteenth Amendment and the Equal Protection Clause by replacing the Intent Doctrine with a Disparate Impact standard that addresses contemporary forms of racism. We use a three-pronged approach to accomplish these goals, combining legal advocacy, outreach and coalition building, and education through effective messaging and communication strategies.

Our legal strategy aims to broaden conceptions of present-day discrimination to include unconscious and structural bias by using cognitive science, structural analysis, and real-life experience. Currently, EJS targets its advocacy efforts on the death penalty, local service and municipal disparities, and inequities in the criminal justice system.

Location: San Francisco, California

Compensation: Although we are unable to offer paid positions, we will work with selected candidates to secure funding through your law school and other possible public-interest funding sources. Academic credit may also be available through your law school.

Deadline: April 1, 2012

* Applications must be received in the office by the deadline.

* Positions will be filled on a rolling basis; early applications are welcome and will be reviewed as they are received.
