BLSA Update for the week of Jan 30
Upcoming Events
February 4 – BLSA/LaRaza Homecoming
This is our biggest networking event of the year. Alumni will be making, for some of them, their only trip to campus this year. This is your chance to visit with alumni from BLSA and LaRaza, work the room, and see if you can make some new connections for friendship and professional contacts. You might even land a job from it! Check the link below for details.

February 13 at noon. Room TBA – Fair Trade Chocolate
Come watch a screening about potential abuses in the production of chocolate. Learn about ways to purchase chocolate made from fair practices. Potential for sampling and purchase.
February 18 – MMAP Community Service Event – scheduled to start at 11a.m. in East Palo Alto. We may have to arrive early for set-up.
In the past, this event has been targeted at helping with an art project. Because of the recent spike in youth violence, the event has been changed a little. Here are details of what we’ll be helping with.
- The community service component will consist of 7 tables:
- Social Networking (FB, YouTube etc. etiquette)
- Professional Correspondence (emails, signatures, etc.)
- Resume
- Office Suite (emphasis on Word)
- College Readiness (scholarship applications for Seniors)
- Art Activity 1 (designed by Sarah)
- Art Activity 2 (designed by Sarah)

Pacific Gas and Electric Company Seeks Applicants
For Its 2012 Summer Internship Diversity Pipeline Program
We thrive on diversity at Pacific Gas and Electric Company and strive to cultivate a workplace where inclusion, acceptance and mutual respect are standard. We are also committed to increasing the diversity of attorneys practicing energy law. With this commitment in mind, in 2007 PG&E’s Law Department established its Diversity Pipeline Program. This program provides law students with an opportunity to experience PG&E’s multifaceted legal practice, interact with attorneys from various law firms, and network with former Diversity Pipeline Program interns.
During the eight-week internship program at PG&E's San Francisco office, up to four (4) first-year law students will receive a variety of work assignments in multiple practice areas which may include litigation, commercial and regulatory matters. The interns will also learn first-hand about PG&E’s business operations and interact with the Law Department’s business clients. Each student will receive an hourly rate of compensation targeted to equate to a $6,000 per-month salary. All compensation is subject to employee withholding.
The program is expected to begin on Monday, June 4, 2012 and to conclude on Friday, July 27, 2012.
Selection criteria include a strong academic record, personal or professional achievement in overcoming hardship, and a demonstrated commitment to diversity. This program is only available to students who are currently first-year law students.
Applications are due no later than Thursday, January 19, 2012 and must include each of the following:
· Resume
· First-year course writing sample (limited to ten (10) pages)
· Personal statement addressing selection criteria (limited to three (3) pages)
· First-year, first semester grades, if available
Applicants are responsible for assuring that their application is timely, accurate, and complete. Please send applications by email to:
LawPipelineResumes@pge.com
If you are selected as a finalist, you will be asked to participate in an in-person or video conference interview on a mutually convenient date between February 6th and February 17th. Please make every effort to attend in-person, if possible.
PG&E provides equal opportunity in employment and advancement for all qualified persons without regard to race, color, religion, age, sex, national origin, ancestry, physical or mental disability, medical condition, veteran status, marital status, pregnancy, sexual orientation, gender identity or any non-job related factor.

Opportunities
Goodwin Procter Public Interest Fellowships for Law Students of Color
For the past six years, Goodwin has invested in a diverse legal community by offering fellowships to high-achieving law students of color. This year, we will again offer awards of $7,500 to students of color who work in public interest positions the summer after their first year of law school. This program allows us to connect with a wide array of talented students early in their legal careers who are committed to giving back to their communities.
In addition to the monetary fellowship award, selected fellows are guaranteed a "straight-to-callback" interview with the Goodwin Procter office of their choice in the fall interview season during their second year of law school. Fellows will also be invited to participate in some of our summer associate program events during their summer at the public interest organization. Find more info here.
PIPS Day is coming. If you’re interested in Public Interest or Public Service Opportunities, check for info here.
